Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of work experience of Taiwan's workers on their earning. In analyzing the determination of job wage, previous literature often focuses on the effects of individual and structural attributes. Thus researchers of labor markets tend to ignore the effects of work experience, including such as the tenure either in a firm or in an industry. We take up this issue by elaborating the detailed definition of work experience. We classify the characteristics of work experience into four indicators: Previous Experience, Occupational Experience , Firm Tenure, and Positional Tenure, and analyze their effects onwage. The results show that occupational experience, measured by the tenure of one's current occupation, has the strongest influence in the process of wage determination. This result indicates that the accumulated tenure in the same firm does not always pay off. In addition, the price of inter-firm mobility is not as high as one has expected.
