Abstract

In recent years, although economic growth has slowed in Europe, the United States, and advanced East Asian countries such as Taiwan and Japan, the younger generation has begun to show an interest in stock investment. In the United States, young people, feeling despair over the widening wealth gap, have attempted to gain substantial wealth through stock investment. Similarly, in Japan, the younger generation has started trying to break through the wealth gap via stock investment. This study attempts to analyze, from the perspective of varieties of capitalism, how Japan's coordinated market economy (CME) and financial system transformation have influenced young people's investment behaviors. The results show that, like the American Generation Z, whose parents' generation experienced economic hardship during the 2008 financial crisis, Japanese Generation Z also witnessed their parents' struggles in the job market after the collapse of the bubble economy. These economic hardships and experiences have been deeply imprinted in their memories. However, unlike the American youth who feel anger and relative deprivation toward institutional investors, Japan's younger generation, influenced by Japan's unique CME-specifically alliance capitalism and the transformation of the financial system-pursues economic independence through government institutional support, social media (SNS), and investment apps. A financial management boom has emerged under the structure of Japan's alliance capitalism. Japan's government stock investment incentive policies are also influenced by constraints from the pension system. Similarly, in Taiwan, young people, facing structural factors such as low wages, high housing prices, and harsh work environments, feel anxious about their future lives. Exploring the relationship between the investment behaviors of Japan's younger generation and its capitalist system also helps to understand the reasons behind the recent surge in stock investment enthusiasm among Taiwan's younger generation compared to the past.
